Meet the Candidate
Mike Murphy, litigator, lover of the arts, and long-time D.C. resident
Michael, a dedicated litigator at Bailey & Glasser LLP, has an impressive track record in class action lawsuits against major corporations. He's also deeply committed to pro bono work, notably representing Two Rivers Public Charter School in a high-profile case.
A second-career attorney, Michael brings a unique perspective, having supported national bargaining committees for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and worked as a paralegal for the D.C. Office of the Corporation Counsel. He graduated cum laude from The Catholic University of America law school, where he was a member of the Law Review.
Michael served as Interim Executive Director of the Drum Major Institute, a non-profit founded on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s principles. A long-time Capitol Hill resident, married for almost 30 years with two children and rescue dogs, he enjoys bouldering, biking, and hosting living room concerts.
WHY RUN FOR WARD 6?
I may not have all the answers, but I’m not afraid to ask the hard questions.
-
Public safety is the foundation that makes everything else possible. Right now, our city is facing a public safety crisis. Rather than take action, politicians have chosen to conceal the reality that we are forced to live with through deflated crime stats and ‘feel-good’ messaging. The result? Anything but a good feeling. Persistent violence, overworked police, unanswered questions, and a lack of accountability to those responsible.
-
Right now, simple tasks are being stymied by overly complex, outdated bureaucratic systems. Getting your car inspected, applying for a business license, or visiting your local rec center should not be complex tasks. We need simple solutions to simple problems, and a community infrastructure that encourages our neighbors to invest and engage in the place that they work, live, and play in.
-
In the past several years we’ve seen a serious erosion to Home Rule. We’ve seen laws receive disapproval votes by Congress and Charles Allen played a singular role in crafting the final legislation that caught the attention of Congress and ultimately were overturned with bipartisan support in Congress.
The result? 14 bills aimed at weakening - or flat-out repealing - Home Rule.
We need Council representation who have the credibility to meet with members that span the ideological spectrum in Congress.
